Madonna and Child

This statue is on the altar of the Mascoli Chapel in the Basilica di San Marco, Venice. The hallmark of this anonymous sculptor is his clever use of forms from Ghiberti's repertoire. For the figure of the Madonna, he followed a type coined by Nino Pisano for the Madonna in Santa Maria Novella in Florence, merely adapting it to Ghiberti's style.
