MASTER IAM of Zwolle
(active 1470-1495 in Zwolle)

The Lactation of St Bernard

1480-85
Engraving, 320 x 241 mm
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

The print depicts a strange event from the legend of the life of Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153), founder of the monastery at Clairvaux: the miracle of lactation. This event was depicted several times in the middle ages, but - contrasting with the depiction of this print - almost invariably as a vision.

The anonymous artist was named Master IAM of Zwolle after the IAM monogram found on his prints.
