MASTER of St Francis
(active c. 1260-1280 in Umbria)

Crucifix

1265-70
Tempera on wood, 96 x 73 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

Production of this type of painted Crucifix would appear to be essentially limited to the late thirteenth century Umbria, notably Assisi and Perugia, a fact that may be explained by the absence of gold workshops in that region. Frequently painted on both sides, these artefacts were placed above an altar, when not being carried in procession.

This Crucifix bears the characteristics of the style of the Master of St Francis who was active in Umbria in this period.
