MASTER of Flémalle
(b. ca. 1375, Valenciennes, d. 1444, Tournai)

Madonna by a Grassy Bank

c. 1425
Oak, 39 x 27 cm
Staatliche Museen, Berlin

This sweet Madonna of Humility is the exception to the Master of Flémalle's habitual severity. The Virgin is sheltered by a brick enclosure with Marian flowers - marguerites - at the top. The panel may have been the right half of a diptych, its lost facing pendant's subject accounting for the Infant's alarmed expression.
