MASTER of Female Half-lengths
(active 1530-1540 in Antwerp)

Mary Magdalene Holding the Unguent Jar

1530s
Oil on panel, 62 x 47 cm
Private collection

This is one of the several different variants of this subject treated by the Master of the Female Half-lengths. Here the figure lifts the lid of an unguent jar that identifies her as Mary Magdalene, the most prominent of Christ's female followers. Her magnificent, richly ornamented clothing and headdress are typical of sixteenth-century courtly dress.
