MASTER of the Clarisse Panel
(documented 1274-1281 in Siena)

Crucifixion

c. 1270
Fresco
Duomo, Siena

This damaged fresco, together with a Deposition, is in the recently found 'crypt', originally the lower atrium, under the cathedral in Siena. It was attributed to Rinaldo da Siena who is considered to be identical with the Master of the Clarisse Panel. The iconography of this fresco is virtually identical to the Crucifixion above the Virgin and Child in the National Gallery, London.
