MASTER of the Hours of Maréchal de Boucicaut
(active 1405-1420 in Paris)

Grandes Chroniques de France

c. 1415
Manuscript (Cotton Ms. Nero E.11)
British Library, London

The French royal family commissioned manuscripts of the Grandes Chroniques de France as diplomatic presents and for their own delight. This copy, illustrated by the Boucicaut Master, contains the French royal arms but is not identifiable in the king's inventory and may therefore have been intended as a gift. The miniature on folio 131v, shown here, shows Charlemagne returning to France after the death of Roland.
