Berswordt Altarpiece

c. 1390
Tempera on wood
Marienkirche, Dortmund

The Berswordt Altarpiece stands today in the northern side nave of the Protestant Marienkirche in Dortmund. The name of the altarpiece goes back to the founder family Berswordt, whose coat of arms can be found in the corners of the altarpiece.

The paintings in the interior of the altarpiece show the Passion of Christ concentrated in three scenes, with the Crucifixion in the centre. On the outer side, seen when the altarpiece is closed, the scene of the Annunciation to Mary is represented.
