MARINALI, Orazio

Marble
Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice

This work belongs to the celebrated set of seven genre figures carved by Marinali for Cardinal Angelo Maria Querini, and kept ever since in the possession of the family, finally ending up in the public collection of the Querini Stampalia foundation, in the palace of the same name. Marinali's work forms a link between the Baroque and the Rococo. He was a virtuoso who shaped marble with a skill reminiscent of Gianlorenzo Bernini, but also with atmospheric effects of the greatest freedom, which anticipates the heyday of the Rococo style.
