This relief was commissioned for the façade of the Certosa in Pavia. Some of the sculptural decoration of the original façade, begun in 1473, survives, including some dramatic reliefs attributed to the Milanese sculptor Cristoforo Mantegazza. His violent Expulsion from the Garden shows Adam and Eve being driven from paradise not by the usual angel but by an angry God, who lunges forward in a gesture of condemnation.
