Michelangelo Maestri incorporated in his paintings motifs from the antique room decorations at Pompeii and Herculaneum, but they are also based on designs by Raphael or his pupil Giulio Romano. They were immensely popular and were acquired in large numbers by northern Europeans on their Grand Tour.
