Portrait of a Boy as Adonis

c. 1670
Oil on canvas. 73 x 63 cm
Akademie der bildenden Künste, Vienna

Until about 1660 Maes painted portraits in the style of his teacher Rembrandt. From 1660 he started to concentrate on the type "portrait historié" in which the sitter slipped into the role of a figure from mythology, literature or history.
