This canvas was found by chance at the Medici villa of Cafaggiolo in 1869. It would seem to be an unfinished work. A close examination of the painting reveals the transparency of the figure's extremely thin skin, almost as if there had been only a first, provisional application of the paint. The fair-haired, muscular young woman is called Venus because of her clear affinity with classical prototype of the "Venere Pudica".
