LORENZETTI, Ambrogio
(b. ca. 1290, Siena, d. 1348, Siena)

Allegory of the Good Government (detail)

1338-40
Fresco
Palazzo Pubblico, Siena

The allegorical composition fills the lower part of the walls of the chamber (Sala dei Nove). It symbolically shows the citizenry trustingly gathered around a paternal and reassuring image of Good Government flanked by the figures of the Virtues. Ambrogio has managed to turn a political, if celebratory, image into a living and breathing picture of real people. Even the symbolic figures seem alive and believable. The figure of Peace is particularly fascinating as she reclines languidly on the left.
