LOMBARDO, Tullio
(b. ca. 1460, d. 1532, Venezia)

St Mark Baptizes Anianus

1480s
Marble, 107 x 154 cm
Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Venice

The picture shows one of the two reliefs on the base the Monument to Doge Giovanni Mocenigo. The other relief depicting the Baptism of Christ is attributed to Antonio Lombardo.

Tullio and Antonio Lombardo moulded the classical aspirations of their father into a genuinely classical style. The success with which they did so may be measured in the lyrical reliefs on the base of the Giovanni Mocenigo Monument, in which the legend of St Mark is translated into the firm rhythms of Latin verse. No relief in Florence in the whole Quattrocento communicates the same feeling of nostalgia for Roman art.
