LOMBARDO, Tullio
(b. ca. 1460, d. 1532, Venezia)

Shrine of the Holy Sepulchre

c. 1484
Marble
San Martino, Venice

Tullio Lombardo's earliest signed sculptures seem to be the figures of four kneeling angels (height 60 cm), carved for the altar of the Holy Sepulchre in San Sepolcro, Venice. Although not finished until 1511, the shrine itself is inscribed 1484, and most historians date the angels to c. 1484. The statues of Sts Peter and John the Baptist (height 200 cm) are by the Lombardo workshop.

The shrine is now in the church of San Martino, Venice.
