Coronation of the Virgin

1500-02
Marble
San Giovanni Crisostomo, Venice

This monumental altarpiece is in the Bernabò Chapel in San Giovanni Crisostomo. This work is so idiosyncratic that attempts too explain its style have led to contradictory results. At centre is the coronation group; the loss of most of the attributes of the apostles accentuates the rather monotonous effect of the line of figures tightly draped in their all'antica clothes. The composition would appear to be the result of a precise calculation based on linear elements and symmetrical correspondences.

Even today there is disagreement on both the origin of this relief and the date and extent of later reworking.
