LOMBARDO, Tullio
(b. ca. 1460, d. 1532, Venezia)

Coronation of the Virgin

1500-02
Marble
San Giovanni Crisostomo, Venice

Tullio's only monumental relief altarpiece depicting the Coronation of the Virgin among the Apostles is in the Bernabò Chapel in San Giovanni Crisostomo, Venice. The chapel was redecorated as part of the neo-Byzantine reconstruction of the church as a domed quincunx by Mauro Codussi, and the relief altarpiece adheres to the same stylistic standards. It breaks with conventional iconography of the subject; the isocephalic frieze of Christ, the Apostles and the kneeling Virgin derives from a relief of the Traditio legis (Tesoro San Marco, Venice) then considered to be antique but now believed to be a 13th-century copy of an Early Christian prototype.

The picture shows the relief on the altar of the chapel.
