View of the Strozzi Chapel

All the frescoes in the chapel are by Filippino Lippi who completed them in 1502. The tomb of Filippo Strozzi behind the altar is by Benedetto da Maiano. The tomb is placed in relation to the altar table so that it seems to lie underneath the table, while the Madonna and Child sculpture that surmounts the tomb becomes a sculpted altarpiece for the chapel itself. Filippino's frescoes on the back wall illusionistically suggest sculpture, integrating the tomb into the total decoration of the chapel.
