The Fear of Cupid's Darts

1739-40
Marble, height 182 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

In this Rococo group, Cupid prepares to hurl a now-missing arrow at a nymph; in his haste, he has dropped the quiver at his feet. Leaning away, the girl instinctively protects her heart with outturned palm.

Two terracotta model exist of this group, one in the Chicago Art Museum and another in a private collection.
