René Nicolas Charles Augustin de Maupeou (1714-1792) was a French politician, chancellor of France, whose attempts at fiscal reform signalled the failure of enlightened despotism in France.
The long-fronted, official marble bust of Maupeou is almost deliberately old-fashioned exuding a heavy, legal air. Maupeou is invested with that falsely smiling benevolence that so often accompanies the law's undue assumption of its own majesty.
