Scenes from the Life of St Bruno
by Eustache LE SUEUR

Eustache Le Sueur painted many pictures for churches and convents, among the most important being his famous series of 22 paintings of the Life of St. Bruno, executed in the cloister of the Chartreux. The blind arcades along the cloister wall were endowid with 22 panels of hagiographic scenes, each accompanied by an explanatory cartouche. In this calmly dignified series (now in the Louvre), the whiteness of the monastic robes provided the basis foe a deliberately simplified, purified representation of great meditative value.

These canvases have more personal character than anything else Le Sueur produced, and much of their original beauty survives in spite of injuries and restorations and removal from the wall to canvas.

St Bruno of Cologne (1030-1101) went to great extremes in rejecting the pleasures of this world by founding a monastery in the Chartreuse Mountains, a home for the Carthusian Order.
