Jan van Huysum was one of the leading still-life painters in the first half of the eighteenth century. He was a direct heir to the tradition of flower painting that Willem van Aelst had established in Amsterdam in the 1650s and which remained the defining type well into the eighteenth century.

The painting is signed bottom: Jan van Huysum fecit.
