HERRERA, Francisco de, the Elder
(b. ca. 1590, Sevilla, d. 1656, Madrid)

St Catherine Appearing to the Prisoners

1629
Oil on canvas
Bob Jones University Collection, Greenville

An important member of the school of Seville was Francisco de Herrera the Elder, whose violent technique was more daring than anything achieved by his colleagues. He excelled in depicting character. Typical of Herrera's work are the series of scenes from the life of St. Bonaventure (now owned by the Prado Museum and Bob Jones University, Greenville, South Carolina) painted in 1628, and the Apotheosis of St. Hermengild, in the Seville Museum.
