At the end of his career El Greco painted one of his most colourful works, The Adoration of the Shepherds, which was intended to decorate El Greco's tomb in one of the chapels of the Santo Domingo El Antiguo in Toledo. He also returned to subjects and compositions formulated earlier: The Purification of the Temple, St Jerome as a Scholar, St Sebastian. He reached the final expression of the type 'Saint in ecstasy' in Saint Jerome Penitent.
