The picture shows the last compartment of the fresco cycle in the Camposanto, Pisa. It depicts the building of the Tower of Babel. In this large-format scene Gozzoli immortalized a series of prominent contemporaries with portraits, among them Lorenzo the Magnificent, a number of Pisan burghers, and himself.
