The Blessed Andrea Gallerani

1447-65
Tempera on wood, gold ground, 48 x 12 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

This panel portraying the standing figure of the Blessed Andrea Gallerani, who died in 1251, formed a pilaster of the Pizzicaiuoli altarpiece which was commissioned by the Sienese guild of the Pizzicaiuoli, purveyors of candles and other dry goods, for their new chapel in the church of the hospital of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena in 1447.

Blessed Andrea Gallerani is portrayed wearing a letter M surmounted by a cross, the emblem of the Confraternity of the Misericordia.
