The Crucifixion

c. 1447
Tempera on panel, 29 x 62 cm
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

This panel depicts the Crucifixion with Mary, John, Mary Magdalene, St Longinus and the Converted Centurion. Christ is on the cross in a hilly landscape. On the left is St Longinus on horseback with spear, on the right of the cross the captain on a white horse, turning to a group of Jews standing behind him. Left of Longinus are Maria with the three holy women, John and Mary Magdalene.

This Crucifixion would have constituted the centre element to the predella of the Pizzicaiuoli altarpiece commissioned by the Sienese guild of the Pizzicaiuoli, purveyors of candles and other dry goods, for their new chapel in the church of the hospital of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena in 1447.

The painting is on loan from the Rijksmuseum Catharijneconvent, Utrecht.
