GIOVANNI DI PAOLO
(b. ca. 1399, Siena, d. 1482, Siena)

Dante: Divina Commedia

1440s
Manuscript (Yates Thompson Ms. 36), 365 x 263 mm
British Library, London

Several remarkable illustrated Dante manuscripts exist. To the codex in the British Library, London, Giovanni di Paolo created the magnificent pictures for the Paradiso section. In the miniature of Canto VIII, on the right Beatrice leads Dante to the next circle of Paradise. On the left is Venus, whom men once worshipped 'in their ancient error'.

Some initials in this manuscript are attributed to the Sienese fresco painter Vecchietta.
