Tomb of Lanfranco Settala (detail)

c. 1355
Marble
San Marco, Milan

Master Lanfranco Settala probably taught theology at the University of Paris. This detail shows him seated in his preceptor's chair, with his devout and diminutive pupils around him.

The friar is in both representations still endowed with the original polychromy of the sculpture, characterized by a black habit dotted with golden stars that recall the same gilding still partially visible in the underlying friezes.
