GIOVANNI DI BALDUCCIO
(active 1315-1349)

Tomb of Azzone Visconti

1340s
Marble
San Gottardo in Corte, Milan

Azzone Visconti (1302-1339) was lord of Milan from 1329 until his death. He is considered the founder of the state of Milan, which later became a duchy. His tomb is in the church of San Gottardo in Corte, which was built as Ducal Chapel by Azzone in 1330, and finished in 1336, as indicated by an inscription on the walls.

The tomb was sculpted by Giovanni di Balduccio and his workshop. The relief on it shows Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian investing Azzone Visconti as imperial vicar. The monument was dismantled during the neoclassical reconstruction of the church, and rebuilt in modern times in the way we can see it now; however several parts of it had been meanwhile lost.
