Fragment of a tomb

1330s
Marble
Civico Museo d'Arte Antica, Castello Sforzesco, Milan

This fragment representing Tobias and the Angel originates from a Visconti family tomb in Santa Tecla. The Basilica di Santa Tecla was an Early-Christian church in Milan, originally established in 350 and demolished in 1458. Remnants of the structure have been excavated underneath the Milan Cathedral.

Giovanni di Balduccio may have been summoned to Milan in 1334 by Azzo Visconti to make a tomb for a member of his family; a few fragments of the tomb from Santa Tecla have been preserved in the Castello Sforzesco.
