GIOVANNI DI BALDUCCIO
(active 1315-1349)

Baroncelli tomb (detail of the exterior)

1330-31
Marble
Santa Croce, Florence

The tomb, set in the entrance wall of the Cappella Baroncelli in Santa Croce, comprises a sarcophagus under a baldacchino in an opening covered by a grille, so that it can be viewed from two sides. The sides of the sarcophagus are by an unknown sculptor who worked in the manner of a goldsmith, but the marble sculptures above are probably the work of Giovanni di Balduccio and an assistant and date from c. 1330-31.
