Zacharias Writes Down the Name of his Son (detail)

1486-90
Fresco
Cappella Tornabuoni, Santa Maria Novella, Florence

The bathed and swaddled baby John has been carried by a young maid across to his old father, Zacharias, who is forced to write down the name of his son as at the annunciation the angel struck him dumb until the birth of his son. Old men are leaning forward in order to read the name.. The extensive landscape in the background shows a town with a harbour in which a ship at anchor is clearly visible. In accordance with the laws of aerial perspective, the colours in the distance become paler and lighter.
