The identity of the sitter is unknown. He wears parade armour, along with starched ruff and cuffs, decorated on the breast with a cross with trefoils at its extremities. He sports a richly bordered green scarf. The cross and the scarf indicate that the man belongs to the order of the Saints Maurice and Lazarus.
The painting is distinguished by its high quality of execution and level of inventiveness. It is one of the rare signed and dated portraits by the artist. The painting was executed in Rome.
