GENTILESCHI, Artemisia
(b. 1593, Roma, d. ca. 1653, Napoli)

St Cecilia Playing a Lute

c. 1616
Oil on canvas, 108 x 79 cm
Galleria Spada, Rome

The attribution of this painting has been questioned in the past. The name of Titian, Angelo Caroselli, Giovanni Baglione and Rutilio Manetti have been suggested, but now most scholars accept the picture as the work of Artemisia Gentileschi. Although the figure plays the lute in the painting, the presence of a portable organ behind her confirms the identification of the subject as St Cecilia.
