Joachim and Anne Meeting at the Golden Gate

This scene at middle left on the east wall, shows not just the city gate, as in Giotto's depiction of the same scene, but also, above a tall crenellated wall, a panorama of the city, that extends across nearly the entire width of the painting. Moreover, the figure of the servant in Joachim's entourage, who is merely suggested in Giotto's scene, is accorded such space and so realistic a character that he becomes a focus of attention for the entire picture.
