DÜRER, Albrecht

The Men's Bath

c. 1497
Woodcut
British Museum, London

This woodcut is related to Dürer's Drawing of the Women's Bath (1496, Kunsthalle, Bremen). The obese drinker on the picture can be compared with Mantegna's Bacchanal. the explanation that the man on the left of the foreground is a portrait of Wolgemuth, and that the young man on the left behind the fence is a portrait of Dürer himself, brings but little conviction.
