DÜRER, Albrecht
(b. 1471, Nürnberg, d. 1528, Nürnberg)

Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand

c. 1496
Woodcut, 39 x 28 cm
Graphische Sammlung Albertina, Vienna

This picture belongs to the series of large woodcuts prior to the Apocalypse. The Critics called attention to the primitiveness of the print. The somewhat meaningless variation in the man on the left in the foreground must have been produced later.

Dürer depicted this massacre a decade later in a painting (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna).
