CUYP, Benjamin Gerritsz.
(b. 1612, Dordrecht, d. 1652, Dordrecht)

Oriental Writer Cutting His Pen

1640s
Oil on panel, 28 x 23 cm
The Kremer Collection

Formerly this painting was attributed to Leonard Bramer, one of those painters who adopted Rembrandt's innovations in their own individual manner. After discovering the signature and further research, in 1996 it was assigned to Benjamin Cuyp who was not a pupil of Rembrandt's but he certainly knew his works, and he used Rembrandt's prints as models for biblical themes.
