Landscape with a Timber Yard near Dordrecht

1639
Oil on panel, 43 x 53 cm
The Kremer Collection

This panel is one of the painter's earliest, painted when he was nineteen--years-old, and may well be the first with a view of his hometown, Dordrecht. This city was famous on account of the timber trade. Timber felled in German forests and regions around Liège was floated down the river to supply hardwood to Dordrecht.
