CRANACH, Lucas the Younger
(b. 1515, Wittenberg, d. 1586, Weimar)

Portrait of the Artist's Father

1550
Oil and tempera on wood, 64 x 49 cm
Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

Although it is certain that the sitter of this portrait is Lucas Cranach the Elder at the age of 77, we cannot be sure who painted the portrait. For a long time it was thought to be a self-portrait. However, convincing arguments resulted in a universal acceptance of Lucas the Younger as the painter of the panel. Lucas the Younger made no attempt to create his own artistic identity, seeing it as his duty to perpetuate the collective workshop style.

It came to the Uffizi as a gift from August the Strong to Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici.
