CRANACH, Lucas the Younger
(b. 1515, Wittenberg, d. 1586, Weimar)

Hunt in Honour of Charles V at the Castle of Torgau

1545
Oil and tempera on wood, 118 x 178 cm
Museo del Prado, Madrid

The depiction of court hunts was one of the most pressing tasks of the Wittenberg court painter. One of the specialities of the Cranach workshop was to particularise its pictures by incorporating portraits into them, thereby turning their hunting scenes into historical documents. Some of the figures in this panel can be identified. For example, to the left of centre is John Frederick, Elector of Saxony, accompanied on the right of centre by Duke Ernest of Brunswick-Lüneburg.

Although this panel conforms essentially to a pictorial type developed by Lucas Cranach the Elder, the execution seems to have been carried out by his son Lucas the Younger.
