The painting depicts an event described in the Gospels. Several women wish to bring their children to Christ to have them blessed, and are turned away by the Apostles but Christ rebukes them. From the middle of the 1530s Cranach's workshop produced this painting in large numbers over a long period; more than twenty versions survived. The version in Frankfurt seems to be one of the earlier examples.
