Cardinal Dubois was a shrewd, shabby Régence figure who managed to become cardinal just a year or two before his death in 1723. His tomb made by Coustou was originally in the Saint-Honoré, Paris. The kneeling figure of the Cardinal is now in Saint-Roch, the rest of the tomb is destroyed. In Saint-Roch the cardinal now kneels against a wall and faces out at the spectator. It is a twist of the head, even while the hands remain stiffly in prayer, which imparts so much vivacity to the statue.
