1590s

Annibale Carracci experienced with the motif of a niche with a statue in this drawing that shows the famous Farnese Hercules, a statue that, as a showpiece of the family's collection, was evidently to be invoked in painted form on the ceiling. In the end, the idea of depicting marble sculptures was abandoned by Annibale and instead he inserted illusionistic antique bronze reliefs in the form of large medallions between the individual frieze paintings.
