Cappella Sistina, Vatican

The gateway, at the centre of the Sistine Chapel's 'cancellata', divides the part reserved for the pontiff and the liturgical celebrations from the area admitted to the faithful. The upper pillars enclose gratings - originally in gilt iron but now in wood - and a row of candelabrum above the lintel. The two inner marble tablets of the lower order are sculpted with putti bearing the emblem of Sixtus IV; the others are adorned with vegetal motifs.

The gateway was executed in collaboration with Mino da Fiesole and Giovanni Dalmata.
