BERRUGUETE, Alonso
(b. 1488, Paredes de Nava, d. 1561, Valladolid)

Eve

1539-43
Wood
Cathedral, Toledo

Between 1539 and 1561 Berruguete worked in Toledo, where he came into contact with Bigarny. He received the commission for the execution of half the choir-stalls in the Cathedral. Two registers, one in alabaster and one in walnut, are decorated with panels showing figures from the Old Testament. In the panel of Eve, there is much that recalls Italian sculpture and especially Michelangelo's. The loose, supple twist of the female nude figure sets off its powerful, muscular forms without making it appear masculine. In his Toledo figures Berruguete employed more thick-set proportions and a fuller modelling than he did in those for the Valladolid altar.
