BERNINI, Gian Lorenzo
(b. 1598, Napoli, d. 1680, Roma)

The Martyrdom of St Lawrence

1617
Marble, 66 x 108 cm
Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

Bernini sculpted his name saint as a pious demonstration of his skill. As innovative as he was precocious, Bernini carved flames and smoke - effects hitherto limited to painting - out of marble. His ecstatic Counter-Reformation martyr, glimpsing Heaven, is far from the jocular figure of medieval sermons, who told his tormentors, "Turn me over, I am done on this side!"
