BERNINI, Gian Lorenzo
(b. 1598, Napoli, d. 1680, Roma)

Self-Portrait

c. 1635
Oil on canvas, 62 x 46 cm
Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

Best-known for being one of the artists who formulated the Baroque in sculpture and architecture, Bernini was also an accomplished painter. In at least one case, he used a self-portrait as a study for the emotions he wished to portray in a sculpted bust, so this work may be such an exploration.
